Mission

To develop PERN into a world class Education and Research Network for collaboration of Pakistani Universities and Research Institutions amongst themselves and with researchers around the world.

Membership Rules

1. Members are committed to the mission of PDF.
2. Members commit to allocate resources to implement the objectives of PDF.
3. Members commit to implementing any network related recommendations for PERN development.
4. Members must have at least one faculty member/researcher interested/committed to supporting PERN.
5. Each member must provide a point of contact and at least one representative for regular PDF meetings.
6. Members commit to implement model LAN networks in their environments to make PERN effective.
7. Members commit to take up at least one responsibility for the PERN Development Project.
8. Members may or may not be part of PERN.
9. Members shall help in developing and supporting new services.

PERN Development Forum Working Groups

Working Group 1: Live Applications

1. Develop a plan for implementation of Live Applications on PERN like VoIP and Video over     IP.
2. Implementation of VRVS Video Reflector on PERN.
3. Resolve Networking Issues in Collaboration with Networking Team

Working Group 2: Networking Issues:

1. IP Addressing: make a policy decision of whether to use Public or Private Addressing for     PERN and resolve related networking issues.
2. Quality of Service: to develop criteria for network audit of PERN for establishing quality of     service, e.g., round-trip delay, jitter etc. for live services.
3. Develop plans and suggest ideas for implementation of latest technologies like PONs,     Wireless Networking etc.

Working Group 4: National Cache

1. Building a national cache on PERN

Working Group 6: Technical Support

1. PERN is negotiating an SLA with NTC. This group will identify techniques and tools to be     used to ensure compliance with SLA.
2. Work with NTC to improve Online Fault Management System
3. Work with NTC to develop Network Monitoring and reporting mechanisms.

Working Group 7: PERN Website

1. Keep PERN website updated with activities and reports of the PDF Working Groups.
2. Develop and implement tools in collaboration with HEC webmaster to support activities of     PDF WGs.
3. Work with HEC webmaster to maintain the PERN Website.
4. Develop plans for professional redesigning of PERN website.

Working Group 8: Shared Applications

1. Develop a framework for sharing of applications across PERN connected universities.
